Middle School Clubs (REC)

St. Helens Middle School REC program

St. Helens Recreation Middle School Afterschool/REC (Recreation, Enrichment and Clubs) is open to all students in the school.  St. Helens Recreation Middle School Afterschool/REC is not a child care program and does not operate on all school days.  Programming is interest based and promoted primarily through school announcements and in school sign ups. REC and most clubs are free and drop in (clubs that travel off site require permission and may have a cost to participate)  These clubs are made possible by a partnership with the St. Helens Middle School and the St. Helens Recreation Program.

REC operates Tuesdays and Thursdays when school is in session. Starting the first week of February and continuing for 8 weeks.

Clubs start February 4th; except Manga/Anime starts on February 11th:

Homework Club: A quiet place for self-motivated students to work on current and missing schoolwork.  Students will have access to instructional materials, a classroom teacher, and a Recreation Program staff member to support in homework completion.  Starting February 4th, Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Media Club: Students will learn the use of cameras, story boarding, editing video and sound, use of microphones, lighting and more. The club starts off with PSAs and interviews and works toward creating short films and possibly podcasts. Media Club will start off with digital citizenship. Students become familiar with a YouTube channel and begin story boarding and learning camera angles. Limit first 20 students to sign up.  Starting February 4th, Tuesdays ONLY.

Gaming Club: Gaming Club is an informal club that provides students who don't have an interest or are between clubs a place to play competitive or cooperative board, table, and card games with each other. Students are encouraged to bring games from home (PG rated) to play with other students or they can play any of the games provided by the St. Helens Recreation Program. The games played vary in difficulty and strategy, from simple play and understand games like Munchkin to intricate and strategic games like Warhammer and Netrunner. The Gaming Club provides the opportunity for students to meet new friends with similar interests and feel like they're part of a team. Students are welcome to join at any time with a signed permission slip; there is no commitment.  Starting February 4th, Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Yoga Club: An eight-week series designed to introduce students to a variety of self-awareness and mindfulness activities.  Students can expect to learn breathing techniques, simple strength and stretch movements, and establish a quiet time practice.  A regular practice of mindful movement leads to increased concentration, decreased stress, general relaxation, and an overall feeling of well-being.  Starting February 6th, Thursdays ONLY.

Manga/Anime Club: Enjoy reading manga and watching anime or even just listening to J-pop or watching k-dramas? Join us for Manga/Anime Club! Anime screenings, manga drawing workshops, Asian culture exploration—anything is possible! No club February 4th, will begin on February 11th, Tuesdays ONLY.

Busing is available for those students who normally ride buses. Forms must be turned in 24 hours in advance of the first day of the club to be able to ride the bus the first day.

In order to be eligible to participate in St. Helens After-School Recreation Clubs, participants MUST be able to function in a high-paced group setting without individualized attention and they MUST be able to understand and comply with the behavioral rules and regulations. The St. Helens Recreation Program follows the St. Helens Middle School’s policies and rules. Our number one goal is to keep the students safe. If that is not happening, then the student will be asked not to come back to the program until they can be safe.
