Armed Robbery Suspect Arrested After Vehicle Crash

St. Helens, Ore. – At approximately 9:37 p.m. on Friday, June 20, 2025, St. Helens officers responded to the report of an attempted robbery with a weapon at 30 Cowlitz Street in St. Helens. The victim reported that he was outside when a male approached him. After a brief conversation, the suspect pulled out a gun and held it to the victim’s head, demanding money. The victim was able to retreat inside his apartment and lock the door before calling 911. The victim watched the suspect flee the scene and provided police with a description of the suspect and his vehicle.

St. Helens Police Department officers and Columbia County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the area and conducted a thorough search for the reported suspect and vehicle but did not find either.

At approximately 10:12 p.m., dispatch received a call reporting a vehicle crash at Miller Road in Scappoose. Scappoose officers responded to the scene and discovered that the driver and vehicle matched the description of the earlier reported robbery. St. Helens officers and Columbia County deputies arrived at the scene and conducted an investigation.

The driver of the vehicle, Raymond Ronald Wayne Helms, 20, was arrested and lodged at Columbia County Jail on charges of Robbery I, Unlawful Use of a Weapon, Coercion, Menacing, Witness Tampering, Tampering with Evidence, DUII, Reckless Driving, and Reckless Endangerment.
